Yes, it has started. Even though I'm not heading to Venus (but maybe they've seen us!), I got 2 weeks left. I am flying out tomorrow to Sydney, and the day right after to Cairns, where I will be doing some snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. Straight back to Sydney (with a day's padding in-between so that my in-flight entertainment isn't the bends, in case I take a Scuba class) for 2 days, and on to Honolulu! I am already debating whether I should chuck all my clothes at the end of Hawaii. Not that they're bad-bad, but I've worn a 1.5-weeks complement of clothes for 5 months straight now. Time to say goodbye to those guys.
What have I been up to? Well, I checked out Christchurch for a few days; "luckily" they had started doing public pus tours through the "Red Zone", which is the area of central Christchurch that was hit hardest by February's earthquake.
Creepy, I tell ya. Imagine all these half-collapsed structures, but on the inside it looks like all humans had been wiped out in a second. The Starbucks was fully stocked and still neatly arranged with its paper cups. But no soul to be seen.
The next day I went to see that ever-elusive national animal, the Kiwi. Because Evolution is mean, it had removed all wings off that poor animal, which meant once the Europeans arrived with their domestic killing machines (cats, dogs) they've been on the retreat ever since. So, to see one of those guys without standing in the middle of the night on Stewart Island for days, you have to go to a zoo! Which I did.
Of course the Kiwi is really the only reason why most people go there, so they arranged the zoo in one big unidirectional loop, with the Kiwis at the end. But, I also saw an ostrich (first for me!) and a turkey (first for me too, cue incredulous laughter by reader)
So yeah, Kiwis are nocturnal critters, so they had built a dark room where they poke their noses into the dirt all day long. Look in the album for pictures.
Then on to Auckland, which is NZ's "big city". Quite nice, with a "Sky Tower" that lets you overlook the whole thing. I also decided to finally go to a Karaoke place (Seth didn't want to enter KTV in China!), and managed to get drinks the whole night for free from the locals. I debated whether I should upload my rendition of the Cheers theme, I did. Enjoy the hilarity :) I also met "Ralf the German" that night (an older guy who had immigrated some time in the 60s), who was actually not that nice a guy to be honest.
So yeah, now I'm still somewhat recuperating from that night, and I also finally got to the other activity I had been putting off since Singapore essentially: a back massage. Hmmmmm, back massage.
BTW, one of the bizarre things here is of course the fact that it's getting close to Christmas and everybody is running around in T-shirts. While that was to be expected I guess, I didn't expect their decorations to involve snowmen and ice skates! First I thought Starbucks was just lazy (where I had seen it first), but the masseuse confirmed that even though down here a Christmas BBQ dinner is a popular thing, the event is also associated with ice and snow. They all thank Hollywood for that one.
That's it for now, next post is probably from Hawaii!
