Yeah, what a crappalicious title, I know :)
Well, potentially last post in a while! Seth and I are heading for Guilin tomorrow, and that means mainland China, and with it the Great Firewall of China! What we could gather so far is that Facebook is not accessible, and blogs neither (unless you do some software acrobatics, which I'm not sure I will do). So, if you're not hearing anything in a while, it's probably software-related, not Chinese Mafia or gastro-intestinal (or whatever).
Speaking of gastro-intestinal, Seth and I are heavily checking out the local cuisine here. And it's awesome! We've had some jellyfish, various kinds of dumplings, and we ended up buying fancy chopsticks in a "chopstick gallery". Always good to have! We've kinda made it policy to test one weird food item per day :)
Tonight we went for some good ol' sushi though and we were kinda raking up the costs (it was a pretty fancy place), up until the moment when we spotted a huge rat running across the floor :) Hilarity ensued with numerous frantic employees trying to chase it out, the result in the end being that the rat got kicked a solid 20 feet out the door onto the wall of the opposite side of the street. Didn't survive it. Seth and I were laughing it off, but the owner of the place was so mortally embarrassed that he gave us the whole meal off. Not bad!
To all the people saying "I knew it! Those Chinese places!", sorry, no points, the places here are pretty damn nice and clean, and in the end we kinda walked an "apologetical gauntlet" out of the place because they were so embarrassed.
We finally figured out our route, which was trickier than I thought. There's a couple of hurdles the PRC puts in your way, one being that you can only buy tickets for train rides in your departure city. Well, not exactly, there's apparently a whole business of people buying tickets for other people in the city they want to depart from. So, fingers crossed, we will get our train tickets delivered to one of the hostels we're staying at.
The other hurdle is that payment methods are limited, and we spent a lot of time today trying to convince Paypal to cooperate. Add to that that China gives the whole country a week off a few days from now, and you can imagine that getting trains or flights isn't the most straight-forward task. Hong Kong is expected to get an additional 2 million people soon. Yup, 2 million.
No matter, it's all figured out now, and our route is:
Hong Kong -> Shenzhen -> Guilin -> Yangshuo -> Changsha -> Xian -> Beijing
(check out on the map above where approximately that is)
Lots of scenery, which is good!
